Tools & Technology

Our gemmologists use specialist instruments, digital tools and reference materials to examine gemstones and jewellery, record their characteristics and prepare appraisals. We choose the tools to suit each item and consider the findings together.

A closer look

Gemmological microscopes and loupes bring small details into view, including internal features, surface condition and workmanship. Tweezers help us handle and position loose gemstones during examination.

Measurements & weight

Gauges help us measure gemstones and jewellery components. Table gauges assist with examining a diamond’s table proportions. Precision scales record weight in grams or carats for our records and appraisal work.

Gemstone examination

Diamond testers support screening alongside other examinations. Refractometers measure how light bends through suitable gemstones. Chelsea filters help us observe colour responses, while ultraviolet (UV) light reveals fluorescence when present. Our stone scanner supports digital examination and documentation.

Preparation & inscription

An ultrasonic cleaner helps prepare suitable jewellery for examination. We assess whether cleaning is appropriate for the item and its gemstones. Our diamond laser inscription machine places identifying text on a diamond’s girdle, supporting identification and record keeping.

Software & reference library

Advanced software helps us organise measurements, images and appraisal information. Gemmological textbooks, pricing lists and reference books support our research and valuation work alongside the characteristics and condition of each item.
