Equipment used in the process
Different instruments answer different questions. Gemmological findings bring observations together rather than relying on a single reading.
Seeing the details
A loupe or microscope helps reveal surface features, inclusions and construction details. Magnification supports examination, but does not answer every identification question by itself.
Measuring and recording
Balances and measuring tools document weight and dimensions. Mounted jewellery can restrict direct measurement, so a report should make relevant limitations clear.
Working with light
Optical observations and spectroscopic methods help investigate a material’s properties. The appropriate method depends on the gem and the question being asked.
Ask about your examination
Contact HWL to discuss the methods appropriate for your item. The instruments described here explain general gemmological principles; the examination selected depends on the item and service.
