The jewellery appraisal process

An appraisal brings an item’s description and an opinion of value together in a written report. Start by explaining why you need the appraisal so the purpose of the report is clear.

Before your visit

Bring your jewellery and any existing reports, receipts or previous appraisals. Tell HWL whether the report is intended for insurance or another purpose, and ask which service is appropriate.

Examination and description

A jewellery assessment considers the gemstones, metal, construction and condition. A mounting can limit what can be measured or observed; ask how this affects the description and any estimates.

Understanding the report

Read the item description, valuation date and stated purpose together. Ask about any qualifications or limitations. A value prepared for one purpose may not be suitable for another.

Keeping your records useful

Store your appraisal and photographs securely. Ask HWL about an update when the item changes or when the organisation requesting the report needs a more recent assessment.
