About diamond grading

Diamond grading describes a stone’s quality characteristics. Identification addresses a different question: what the material is and whether it is natural or laboratory-grown.

The 4Cs

Colour, clarity, cut and carat weight describe different aspects of diamond quality. Carat measures weight, rather than face-up size. Two diamonds of the same weight can look different.

What a report tells you

Read the measurements, shape, grading results and comments together. Check which characteristics the report covers and which examination limits apply, especially to mounted stones.

Natural and laboratory-grown

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can appear very similar. Reliable identification can require specialist laboratory examination; appearance or a simple handheld tester alone does not establish growth origin.

Grading and valuation

A grading report records characteristics. An appraisal addresses value for a stated purpose. Ask HWL which report suits the question you need answered.
